Queen Gresilda had just given birth to a baby girl who had a rosebud mouth and large blue eyes. However, when the mid-wife picked up the child she noticed what seemed to be small lumps just under her shoulder-blades.
The weeks passed and Princess Violet, as she had been called, gurgled happily in her mother's arms but soon it became difficult for the Queen to put the child on its' back because the lumps were growing and tiny feathers had started to show.
At six months the feathers were clearly those of a male peacock and fell down the child's back in glorious colours - turquoise, pink and blue. This was, of course, much to the constenation of the mother who searched far and wide for a specialist who could advise her what to do. One said the wings should be cut off, another that, as the child didn't appear to suffering they could easily be hidden under her dresses.
But Princess Violet was proud of her peacock feathers which grew to the ground and followed her around like the train of a bridal gown. But who on earth is going to marry her wailed the Queen to the King?
Then one day a handsome Prince came to the Palace and presented himself to the royal parents. He had heard about the Princess and her Peacock feathers and he was eager to ask her hand in marriage. Princess Violet, now l6 years of age stood there, with her long blonde hair, her pink skin and blue eyes with the feathers spread out around her, for the Prince's benefit, on the marble floor. The Queen started to stammer excuses on behalf of the Princess but the Prince stopped her. He took of his blue velvet cloak which also fell to the floor and turning around he showed the Royal family a set of wings more beautiul than the Princess's - sprouting from his back was a kaleidoscope of feathers from several Birds of Paradise - blues and mauves and oranges and emeralds.
